전시 제목인 ‘센스 앤 센스빌리티’는 저 유명한 제인 오스틴의 동명 소설에서 차용한 것입니다. 물론 이 전시의 작품들은 소설의 내용과 직접적인 관련은 없습니다. 그러나 소설이 보여주는 정교하고 감각적인 문체의 대사처럼 이 전시의 작품들은 엄격한 지성과 섬세한 감수성이 서로 균형과 조화를 이루면서 어울리게 될 것입니다.

이 전시의 작품들은 정갈하면서도 매혹적이고, 엄격하면서도 풍부한 감성을 보여줍니다. 이 전시의 참여작가들은 각자 독특한 개념을 극단적으로 밀어붙이면서도 건조하지 않고, 섬세한 감수성을 보여주면서도 서투른 감상에 빠지지 않습니다. 그래서 오스틴의 소설에서 주인공들이 서로 다른 방식으로 사랑과 고통의 의미를 깨우쳐 가듯이, 이 전시의 참여작가들은 다채로운 개념과 분방한 양식으로 아름다움과 그 속에 담긴 의미들을 전해줍니다.

참여작가 모두 이지적 사고와 섬세한 감성의 호응과 앙상블이 무한한 감동을 만들고, 사소한 디테일이 모여 커다란 공간적 울림을 만든다는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 이들 중에는 물질을 감각적으로 해석한 작가도 있고, 손에 대한 집요한 믿음을 보여주는 작가도 있습니다. 또 회화의 기본 조건을 여러 층위에서 재맥락화 한 작가도 있고, 빛과 공간의 호응이 만드는 미묘한 파장과 울림을 보여주는 작가도 있습니다. 또 심리적 동조를 통해 만남과 우정의 회복을 호소하는 작품도 있고, 지각적 상상력의 극한을 탐구하는 작품도 있습니다. 

홍수연의 작품의 매력은 조용하면서도 끊임없이 움직이는 듯한 이미지가 만드는 잠정적인 느낌에 있다. 유동적인 물감 층을 엷게 올린 캔버스를 기울여 이미지를 만드는 그 프로세스에는 인과성과 우연, 의도와 즉흥성이 간명하게 결합되어 있다. 물감의 양과 점성, 밀도와 투명도가 서로 다른 색층이 만드는 불안정한 윤곽들은 수면 위의 색 그림자를 연상시킨다. 작가의 작품들은 반투명하고 불안정하기 때문에 더 촉각적으로 다가온다. 아주 천천히 떠올랐다가 이내 바탕으로 사라져버릴 것 같은 잠정적인 느낌 때문에 그 잔상이 오래 남는다.

The exhibition title, "Sense and Sensibility," is borrowed from Jane Austen’s celebrated novel. While the artworks do not directly relate to the book's plot, they mirror the balance found in its sophisticated and sensory dialogue—a harmony between rigorous intellect and delicate sensitivity.

The works in this exhibition are at once refined and enchanting, disciplined yet emotionally rich. Each participating artist pushes their unique concepts to the extreme without becoming clinical; they display profound sensibility without lapsing into cloying sentimentality. Much like the characters in Austen’s novel who awaken to the meanings of love and pain through their distinct paths, these artists convey beauty and its inherent depths through diverse concepts and uninhibited styles.

Every participating artist understands that the resonance between intellectual thought and delicate emotion creates infinite inspiration, and that meticulous details coalesce to form a grand spatial vibration. Among them are artists who sensorially interpret materiality, or show a persistent faith in the labor of the hand. Others re-contextualize the fundamental conditions of painting across multiple layers, or capture the subtle wavelengths and resonances born from the interplay of light and space. Some works appeal for the restoration of meeting and friendship through psychological alignment, while others explore the extremes of perceptual imagination.

Sooyeon Hong’s allure lies in the provisional quality of her images—quiet, yet seemingly in constant motion. Her process involves layering fluid pigments on a tilted canvas, a method where causality and chance, intention and spontaneity are concisely intertwined. The unstable contours formed by layers of varying pigment quantity, viscosity, density, and transparency evoke colored shadows dancing upon a water surface. Because Hong’s works are translucent and unstable, they approach the viewer with a heightened tactile quality. The lingering imagery remains long after viewing, precisely because of this provisional feeling—as if the forms have slowly surfaced only to soon vanish back into the depths.
