A consistent observation in Sooyeon Hong’s work is that human actions may not necessarily constitute meaning. Through her art, she explores how the perception of human life can be expressed as a series of randomized situations. The theme of this exhibition, "The Firmament," evokes a sky so infinitely vast that it lays bare the futility of artificial actions—the human struggle to create history within the flow of time—while simultaneously absorbing historical events into eternity. To this work, the artist attaches the descriptor "transparency."
The pieces in this exhibition bear titles such as Blue, Purple, Green, Night, and Being. Here, the "transparency" she claims can be interpreted as the way light—the most fundamental mechanism that allows humans to perceive color and brings existence into being—permeates human life without a physical form.
