홍수연은 단색으로 칠한 캔버스 표면 위로 여러 층의 반투명 점막이 서로 상호 침투하는 독특한 형상을 창조한다. 마치 구름처럼 부유하듯 너울 거리는 형상은 아크릴 물감과 소량의 피그먼트 그리고 여러 종류의 투명 미디엄의 절묘한 배합에 의해 탄생된다.

이런 점에서 홍수연을 지치지 않는 끈기와 열정으로 실험을 거듭하는 연금술사라 부를 수 있다. 적절하게 조절된 농도의 액상을 화면위에서 이리저리 중력을 이용해 흘림으로써 작가의 눈앞에서 신비한 빛을 발하는 색층이 형성된다. 이를 우연과 의도의 운명적인 결합에 의해 흐르는 시간이 결정화 (crystallization)되는 현상이라 하겠다.

얼마 전 작가는 알래스카의 빙하를 볼 기회를 가졌다. 거대한 빙하가 북극의 바닷물 속으로 침투하고 녹아 드는 결정체가 유동체로 전환되는 접점에서 자신이 화면에서 추구해 온 움직임과 부동성, 물질과 비물질 사이에 존재하는 한 특별한 층(Layer)를 발견할 수 있었다고 한다.

Sooyeon Hong creates unique forms where multiple layers of translucent membranes interpenetrate over a monochromatically painted canvas. These shapes, which sway and drift like clouds, are born from an exquisite blend of acrylic paint, small amounts of pigment, and various types of transparent mediums.

In this sense, Hong can be called an alchemist who experiments repeatedly with tireless persistence and passion. By allowing liquid of precisely controlled viscosity to flow across the surface using gravity, she forms color layers that emit a mysterious radiance before her very eyes. This phenomenon can be described as the crystallization of flowing time, achieved through a fateful union of coincidence and intention.

Not long ago, the artist had the opportunity to witness the glaciers of Alaska. At the interface where massive glaciers penetrate the Arctic waters and melt—where crystals transform into fluids—she discovered a specific "Layer" that exists between the movement and immobility, the material and the immaterial, that she has long pursued on her canvases.
